Maintenance
By following maintenance schedules you can prolong the life of your vehicle. According to the National Car Care Aware Council 38% of cars had low or dirty engine oil, 54% had low tire pressure, 28% had inadequate cooling protection, 19% needed new belts, 16% had dirty air filters and 10% had low or contaminated brake fluid. If you haven’t checked your tire pressure for instance, stop by a local Custom Complete Automotive and receive a free customer courtesy check. We will perform a 21 point maintenance inspection that will save you time and also give you peace of mind on the road. By following a maintenance schedule you can increase the life of your vehicle and decrease your chances of breakdown. Custom has your vehicle's service recommendations available and we can perform any factory-scheduled maintenance that your vehicle would require.
Points of Interest
Belts
The function of the timing belt/chain is to harmonize the engine’s camshaft, crankshaft, distributor (if vehicle has one) and the water pump.
A common sign of wear would be the engine stopping or the engine backfiring.
The function of the serpentine belt is to transfer power from the crankshaft to the alternator.
Common signs of belt wear include cracking, splitting, squealing, dimming headlights while driving, or loss of battery charge.
Inspect all drive belts every 15,000 miles/12 months. Adjust V-belt tension every 30,000 miles. Replace drive belts and timing belts every 60,000 miles or according to your owner’s manual for service recommendations.
Hoses
The function of the radiator hose and clamps is to move coolant throughout the engine without any leaks.
Common signs of wear are leaking, cracking, splitting, hardening, brittleness or lack of heat in cabin.
The standard service recommendation is to check your hoses for signs of wear every 12 months.
Wiper Blades
The function of wiper blades is to ensure the safety of the vehicle and occupants through water, ice, snow, and other debris that may affect the vision of the driver.
Common signs of wear include streaking, chattering, worn or split rubber, bent wiper frame, etc. Recommendations from your owner’s manual usually suggest yearly replacement due to the extreme necessity of these parts.
Also, if there is a lack of cleaning fluid spray, the washer pump may be to blame. The wiper arms serve as the mounting surface for the wipers and if they are not functioning properly, an erratic pattern may result and replacement maybe necessary.
Fuel System Service
The symptoms of needing a fuel system service include rough idle, reduced fuel economy, hesitation when accelerating, engine knocking, loss of performance, cold start problems, need for higher octane fuel, and failed emission testing.
The reason why we recommend performing a fuel system service is to clean the deposits that may be in the fuel injectors, intake ports intake valves, combustion chambers, throttle body, and the intake manifold.
One of the benefits of having this service performed is that it decreases harmful emissions by reducing the deposits.
If this service is performed on a regular basis your vehicle will operate more efficiently.
Automatic Transmission Service
The symptoms of transmission failure include shifting problems, overheating, frequent towing, and stop and go driving. Your transmission should be serviced according to manufacturer recommendation.
The benefit of having Custom perform this service is that our method requires a flush where as the conventional method only removes a small portion of the contaminated fluid.
This service is necessary because excessive heat causes the transmission to fail. Deposits build up in the transmission. The transmission coolers are also build-up sites.
Performing a transmission flush requires special equipment that removes more of the deposits and will help extend the life of your transmission.
Cooling System Service
The symptoms that mean your vehicle requires a cooling system service are overheating problems, frequent use of towing, and lack of radiator service.
Your cooling system should be serviced every 30,000 miles, 60,000 miles or according to the manufacturer recommended service interval.
The benefit of having this service performed is that coolant failure is the
#1 cause of on-road engine related breakdowns.
Antifreeze coolant wears out causing it to lose its protective qualities.
When this happens corrosion of the cooling system begins. Rust and scale may build up interrupting the proper flow of coolant. If the cooling system is not serviced this can lead to overheating and expensive repairs. Choose Custom to perform this service because we have the proper equipment and product to “flush” your system and extend the life of your cooling system.
Regular Zerex Radiator Super Flush can help prevent engine boil-over in the summer and prevent engine freeze up in the winter.
Power Steering System Service
The symptoms that your power steering system needs service are sluggish steering, squeals or squeaks, and chattering in the steering system.
The benefits of having Custom flush your power steering system using a Valvoline SynPower Power Steering Flush is that it removes sludge and contaminants from the system including the rack and pinion, pump, and lines. By adding new, clean fluid it prevents leaks and noises.
The benefits for your power steering system include helping to protect against pump breakdown caused by corrosion, wear and oxidation, and prevents clogging and foaming.
Old coolant may be broken down by shear and heat. This can lead to increased wear in the pumps, valves and gears leading to the need for expensive repairs.
The new fluid can withstand subzero temperatures to optimize cold weather performance. Note: The power steering fluid should be checked with every oil change.
Cabin Air Filters
Cabin air filters do for the passenger compartment what air conditioning and heating do for your home—filter and clean the air you breathe.
Cabin air filters can filter out most airborne pollen, dust particles, and other contaminants.
The benefit of cabin filtration is that is helps protect yourself and your family from hazardous pollutants like harmful exhaust gases from entering your inside passenger compartment.
As a general guideline cabin air filters should be changed according to vehicle manufacturer recommendations or every 12 months or 15,000 miles.
Engine Air Filters
Engine air filters trap airborne dust particles before they enter the engine.
Signs of wear include an excessively dirty filter element, decreased engine performance, and increased fuel consumption. Engine air filters should be changed every 15,000 miles or according to your owner’s manual.
Oil Filter
The function of the oil filter is to cleanse the engine oil to help reduce wear on the internal components. Common signs of wear include dark, dirty-appearing oil.
In-line Fuel Filter
The function of the in-line fuel filter is to trap fuel contaminants before they enter the engine’s fuel delivery system.
Common signs of wear include a rough-running engine, poor acceleration, decreased fuel economy, and decreased power at high road speeds.
Automatic Transmission Filter
The function of the automatic transmission filter is to keep abrasive particles in the transmission fluid from reaching the transmission’s components.
A common sign of wear is an excessively dirty filter element.
